Introduction

Something Happened was a production intensive based in Tamworth, Ontario in July 2024. It shaped its inquiry through methods of lens-based, auditory, material, and literary description. A consistently past-tense positioning of the intensive sought to invert standard future-facing scripts of arts programming and artist residency structures, as well as curriculum designs and course descriptions. It took the understanding that these forms projectively map an image of how something will happen, capturing the future while overdetermining the present*:* an exhibition is to open, new ideas are to be discovered, a student’s learning is to be synthesized... Instead, Something Happened announced itself, to its participants and guests, as a project that had always already occurred, unfolding perpetually in the shadow of its own conclusions. In Tamworth, while the ‘something’ **in question was never given, the idea that it had all already occurred was collectively held, focusing the shared retrospective gaze of a consortium of thinkers.

We set ourselves in a total effect. Everything had already taken place. What was left to do was lead back to the cause…
